Supporting your business with soil sampling
Although brownfield site developers are frequent clients, a surprisingly diverse group of organisations and individuals use our soil sampling, contaminated soil testing and analysis services, including…
• Demolition contractors
• Local government and educational institutions
• Civil engineers
• Land developers and building companies
• Commercial estate agents and property management companies
• Land owners and farmers
• Home owners
What type of contaminants might you encounter?
Brownfield sites, agricultural land and other sites already suspected of contamination can be affected by many different types of contaminants, including…
• Waste building materials which can contain fibreglass, silica, cadmium, PVC etc
• Asbestos – used in roofing, insulation, lagging and flooring
• Pharmaceutical waste for example drugs, receptacles and waste water sludge
• Oil based products including fuel oil and paint
• Toxic waste, e.g. lead, mercury, cyanides and cadmium
• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde and chloroform
The importance of the soil sampling process
Following initial consultations to review any existing documentation and understand the history of your site, we’ll determine which types of samples are required and how they’ll be taken.
Numerous samples will be extracted across the site in order to identify the extent and type of any contamination. Brownfield sites are particularly complex due to the potential range of contaminants.
The preparation of soil samples is a complex process and requires extensive professional training. Samples must be correctly preserved or stabilised on site, to ensure that they retain any potential contaminants from which to provide accurate data during analysis.
Laboratory analysis and soil remediation report
In the UK, laboratory analysis is carried out using the monitoring emissions to air, land and water (MCERTS) regulations. This ensures that all samples are correctly analysed and that results are accurate and complete.
The laboratory documents the tests conducted and their findings, from which we produce a remediation report which we’ll discuss with you in detail. This report identifies recommendations for how to remove and dispose of any contaminants and forms the basis of a remediation project plan.
This phase also includes Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) testing which determines what type of landfill is appropriate for any contaminants identified.
