What is contaminated land remediation?
To enable locations such as brownfield sites and former agricultural land to be developed, it’s often necessary to remove or treat contaminants and carry out work to prevent future contamination. This is the principle known as contaminated land remediation.
The process usually follows a phase of soil sampling, testing and analysis which determines the types and level of contaminants present.
Determining the most appropriate methods for removing or treating contaminants depends on many factors, including the initial source of the contamination, the type of development being carried out, the timescales required and your budget.
Techniques for soil remediation
Where the contamination is historic and no future risk of contamination exists, a common solution is to excavate the affected soil and dispose of it at a regulated landfill site, where separation techniques can often remove the contaminants to minimise the landfill deposit.
Other specialist techniques such as soil aeration, chemical oxidation, bioremediation and thermal desorption can be used to treat soil, removing or reducing contaminants to safe levels.
Where there’s a risk of ongoing contamination, for example from an adjacent site or ground water, engineering solutions may be required to ensure that contamination does not recur following an initial remediation.
Project management and compliance
We provide a full project management service, from initial consultation, through testing and analysis to remediation and sign-off. Our team will represent your interests and keep you informed on progress.
Contaminated land remediation is predominantly regulated under the Environmental Protection Act. With a quality management system certified to ISO 9001, you can be confident that our land remediation services meet the most rigorous standards.
We’re also proud members CL:AIRE (Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments), a not-for-profit organisation which consults on the regeneration of contaminated land, and provides best practice guidance and resources.
Other remediation factors to consider
Different types of development may allow different remediation approaches to deliver a ‘suitable for use’ sign-off. For example, a multi-story car park might require a lowered level of a contaminant, whereas a housing development might require the complete removal of all traces.
Future work may require any previous contaminated land remediation work to be revisited, so it’s worth considering this possibility when deciding on which method of remediation to employ.
Sometimes it might be possible to deal with contamination using our fly tipped waste removal service prior to the commencement of development, removing the need for a full remediation program.
